TCCP's Homemade Play-Dough Recipe


  • 2 cups flour (all purpose is good)

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 

  • 1/2 cup salt

  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

  • 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (add slowly until texture feels right)

  • Gel food coloring (optional)

  • A few drops of glycerine (adds stretch and shine!)


  1. Mix flour, oil, salt, and cream of tartar in a large bowl.

  2. Add food coloring (optional) to the boiling water then add water to the dry ingredients.

  3. Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough.

  4. Add glycerine (optional)

  5. Let cool and then remove from bowl. Knead vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. (This is the most important part of the process, so keep kneading until it’s the right consistency!)

  6. If it is still a little sticky, add a bit more flour

  7. Enjoy! This can be stored for up to 6 months if kept in an airtight container!
